Why Wooden Train Sets Are Still Attracting Great Interest

Wooden train sets are, in many ways, a throwback to the past. With the easy availability of plastic material, the need to use wood has diminished over time. A wooden model will never be able to achieve the same degree of realism on a model railroad that a plastic based model can, despite the fact that wood is a natural material. Wood has also largely been superseded by plastic in the manufacture of toy trains, although there is still a greater demand for wooden toy trains.

A wooden train set was once the standard design, especially for children who were just starting out with their first train set. Wood can be made to be hard wearing and durable with strong coating and finishing, and paint can also add to the durability. A parent buying a train set for a young child has two major concerns. Firstly, will the product be durable enough to stand up to potential rough treatment, and secondly, will the child outgrow the toy too quickly? Tough plastic addresses these concerns even more acutely than wood.

A train set made from wood still has a certain character that the plastic ones lack, and if your child is thoughtful and of above average intelligence they will possibly appreciate that. It is possible to get wooden train sets which run on both the floor and on the equivalent of rails, giving maximum flexibility. The equivalent of rails is simply a groove in a base which makes the train follow a predetermined course, as a train would in real life.

When you start to become more enthusiastic about railroad modeling, and want to build layouts to represent something real, you will need to move on to electric trains. Nevertheless, the experience and insight you can gain from working with wooden trains can be useful as you progress. You will still have had to create space for the layout to operate in, you will have needed to optimize light conditions in the area of the layout, and you will have needed to build the base on which the train needs to run. Even if you could find a pre-built base, you still have to mount it correctly.

There is now another aspect to collecting wooden train sets, and that is the possibility of them being collector’s items. Some train sets of the past were only made in small quantities, and their value is likely to increase as time goes by. You can easily start a business buying and selling these items on the online auction sites, once you have developed enough knowledge. If you can buy enough lots to be able to sell part of the lot to recoup your investment, the ones you retain are effectively free investments. This can add a fascinating extra dimension to collecting wooden train sets.
